Griha pravesh muhurat 2027: how housewarming dates are chosen

A griha pravesh date is chosen with the same panchang machinery as a wedding — nakshatra, tithi, weekday, karana — and the same closed seasons. Here are the rules, a worked check, and a link to the computed 2027 list for your city.

A griha pravesh (housewarming) date is chosen by testing each day against a set of panchang rules: the Moon should be in a fixed or gentle nakshatra, the tithi should not be a Rikta tithi (4th, 9th, 14th) or Amavasya, the weekday and karana should be acceptable, and the day should fall outside Kharmas, Chaturmas and any period when Venus or Jupiter is combust. The surviving dates are then narrowed to an hour for the city where the house is.

The computed list is at Griha pravesh muhurat 2027. Choose your city, and each date is shown with the conditions it met. This page explains those conditions.

What griha pravesh marks

Griha pravesh is the first formal entry into a home. The tradition distinguishes three cases: apoorva, entering a newly built house for the first time; sapoorva, re-entering a home after a long absence; and dwandwah, returning after major renovation or repair. The strictest rules are usually applied to the first, and many families relax them for the other two. Most people searching for a griha pravesh muhurat mean the first: a new flat or house, bought or built.

The day-level rules

Nakshatra

The Moon's nakshatra is the main filter. The traditionally favoured group combines the "fixed" (dhruva) nakshatras, which suit things meant to last, with the "soft" (mridu) ones, which suit gentle, domestic beginnings:

  • Fixed: Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Soft: Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati

Some almanacs add one or two more, such as Dhanishta or Shatabhisha. The principle is consistent: a home is meant to be permanent, so fixed nakshatras lead the list.

Tithi

Avoid the Rikta tithis, the 4th, 9th and 14th of either fortnight, and Amavasya. The waxing fortnight (Shukla paksha) is generally preferred, as for most auspicious beginnings.

Weekday

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are traditionally favoured. Tuesday is widely avoided for entering a new home. Sunday and Saturday are treated differently by different regions.

Karana

Vishti (Bhadra) karana, one of the eleven half-tithis, is avoided for any auspicious beginning, including this one.

The closed seasons

The same three exclusions that close wedding seasons apply here.

  • Kharmas: while the Sun is in sidereal Sagittarius or Pisces, roughly mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April.
  • Chaturmas: from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartika, four lunar months of about 29.53 days each, so roughly 118 days, usually covering most of July to early November.
  • Combustion: while Venus or Jupiter is too close to the Sun to be seen (Shukra or Guru asta). These periods move from year to year.

Many regional traditions also name preferred lunar months for griha pravesh, commonly Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha, and discourage others. The site does not apply a month list on top of the rules above, which is one reason its list can be a little longer than some printed almanacs.

A worked check of one day

Test a hypothetical day the way the calculator does.

  • The Sun is at 305° sidereal longitude, in Aquarius. Not Sagittarius or Pisces, so not Kharmas; and not within Chaturmas, which ends in Kartika.
  • Neither Venus nor Jupiter is combust.
  • The Moon is at 46°. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′, or 13.33°. 46 ÷ 13.33 = 3.45, so three nakshatras are complete and the Moon is in the 4th, Rohini. Fixed: good.
  • Elongation of the Moon from the Sun: 46 − 305 = −259°, and adding 360° gives 101°. 101 ÷ 12 = 8.42, so the 9th tithi, Shukla Navami. That is a Rikta tithi.

The day fails on tithi alone, despite an excellent nakshatra. Move a day later: the Moon gains about 12° on the Sun per day, so the elongation is around 113°, and 113 ÷ 12 = 9.42 is the 10th tithi, Dashami, which is acceptable. The Moon, moving about 13° a day, is now near 59° and has passed into Mrigashira (53°20′ to 66°40′), a soft nakshatra, so the nakshatra still qualifies. If that day is a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and the karana is not Vishti, it would qualify.

This is the pattern behind most lists: a good nakshatra is common, a good nakshatra on an acceptable tithi and weekday is not.

Why lists differ

Expect most dates on the site to agree with a reputable almanac, and a few not to. The reasons are ordinary:

  • Regional additions: month preferences, yoga restrictions, rules about the direction the door faces, or the householder's own birth nakshatra.
  • Calendar convention: amanta (month ends at new Moon) and purnimanta (month ends at full Moon) calendars name months differently, which matters for month-based rules.
  • Place: the tithi and nakshatra in force are judged at local sunrise, so a date valid in Mumbai may not be valid in Brampton or Melbourne. Use the list for the city where the house is.

Some families also consult the householder's own chart, checking that the date's nakshatra is compatible with the birth nakshatra. A free kundli gives you the birth nakshatra if you do not already know it.

Choosing the hour

Once you have the date, the entry is usually timed to a favourable lagna, or within a good window such as a good choghadiya or Nalla Neram, avoiding Rahu Kaal. See the choghadiya tables or Nalla Neram for your city.

There is also the honest practical question. Possession dates, leases and removal companies do not consult the panchang. Many families handle this by performing the formal entry and puja on a chosen day, even if furniture arrives earlier or later. That is a long-standing practical accommodation, not a loophole. Frequently asked questions

Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmas?

Traditionally a first entry into a new house is avoided during Chaturmas. Many families are more flexible about returning to a renovated home in that period. The 2027 list excludes Chaturmas entirely.

Is griha pravesh muhurat needed for a rented home?

Practice varies. Many families perform a simple puja on a good day when moving into a rented home, without the full set of rules. The computed list applies the full rules, which you can relax if your tradition does.

Which nakshatra is best for griha pravesh?

The fixed nakshatras, Rohini and the three Uttaras, are the traditional first choice, with Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati also favoured.

Do I use the date list for where I live now or the new house?

The new house. The panchang is judged at local sunrise where the entry takes place.
