Vehicle purchase muhurat: choosing a day and hour to buy a car

The tradition favours "moving" and light nakshatras, non-Rikta tithis and certain weekdays for buying a vehicle, and a Char or Labh choghadiya for the hour. Here are the rules as commonly held, a worked check, and where to find computed dates.

A vehicle purchase muhurat is traditionally chosen in two steps. First the day: the Moon in a favourable nakshatra (the "moving" and "light" groups are preferred, because a vehicle exists to move), a tithi that is not Rikta (4th, 9th, 14th) or Amavasya, a favoured weekday, and a karana other than Vishti. Then the hour: a good choghadiya, with Char and Labh the usual choices, outside Rahu Kaal.

For a computed list of qualifying days, see Vehicle muhurat 2027 and choose your city. For the hour on the day itself, use the choghadiya table for where you are taking delivery.

Choosing the day

Nakshatra

The Moon's nakshatra is the main filter. Traditional lists for buying a vehicle draw on three groups:

  • Movable (chara): Swati, Punarvasu, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha. These are held to suit anything meant for motion: vehicles, travel, moving house.
  • Light (laghu): Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta. Held good for trade, purchases and quick undertakings.
  • Soft (mridu): Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati. Held good for pleasant, everyday beginnings.

Almanacs differ on the margins. Some include Rohini and the three Uttaras, which are "fixed" nakshatras more often recommended for property; some exclude one or two of the names above. The movable group is the one nearly all of them agree on.

Tithi

The commonly favoured tithis are the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th, and the full Moon. The Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya are avoided. The waxing fortnight is generally preferred.

Weekday

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are traditionally favoured. Friday, the day of Venus, is often singled out, because Venus is associated with vehicles and comforts. Tuesday and Saturday are commonly avoided for a vehicle purchase, though some regional traditions accept Saturday for iron and machinery.

Karana

Vishti (Bhadra) is avoided, as it is for any auspicious beginning.

The year-level exclusions

Vehicle purchases are not usually held to the full set of seasonal closures that apply to weddings and griha pravesh, and the computed vehicle list applies none of them: it judges each day on its own panchang. Many families still avoid buying during Kharmas or while Venus is combust. If yours does, cross-check a date against the closed periods listed on the Vivah muhurat 2027 page, which are worked out for the same city.

Choosing the hour

Once the day is fixed, the hour is chosen from the day's choghadiya. Choghadiya divides the daylight into eight equal periods, each named after a planetary character.

  • Char (Venus) is the classic choice for vehicles and travel: "moving", and ruled by the planet of vehicles.
  • Labh (Mercury) is favoured for purchases and transactions.
  • Shubh (Jupiter) and Amrit (Moon) are good for any beginning.
  • Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided.

Then check the window against Rahu Kaal for the same day and city. Rahu Kaal is another eighth of the daylight, so it either coincides with a choghadiya exactly or not at all. On Tuesday it coincides with Shubh and on Thursday with Amrit, which is why it is worth checking even within a favourable choghadiya. See choghadiya explained and how Rahu Kaal is calculated.

A worked check

Take a hypothetical Friday and test it.

  • The Sun is at 148° sidereal longitude and the Moon at 199°.
  • Nakshatra: each spans 13°20′, or 13.33°. 199 ÷ 13.33 = 14.93, so fourteen nakshatras are complete and the Moon is in the 15th, Swati (186°40′ to 200°). Movable: good, though it is near the end, so the Moon will move into Vishakha within a few hours.
  • Tithi: elongation 199 − 148 = 51°. 51 ÷ 12 = 4.25, so four tithis are complete and this is the 5th, Shukla Panchami. Favoured.
  • Karana: 51 ÷ 6 = 8.5, so this is the 9th karana. After the fixed first karana, the movable seven run Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija, Vishti from the 2nd to the 8th, and start again at the 9th. The 9th is Bava, not Vishti.
  • Weekday: Friday. Favoured.

The day qualifies, but the nakshatra is close to changing. A Moon moving roughly 13° a day covers the last 1° of Swati in under two hours, so the useful part of the day may be the morning only. This is why computed lists often show a time window, not just a date, and why the hour matters as much as the day.

On a Friday the day's choghadiya runs Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char. Char and Labh are the first two eighths of the day. If the nakshatra condition holds in that window, that is the time to sign and take the keys.

Delivery, booking or registration?

Buying a vehicle is usually several events: booking, payment, registration, delivery. Traditions differ on which one counts. The most common view is that the moment that matters is when you take possession and first drive it, and that is what most families time. If you cannot control the delivery date, choosing the hour within the day is still possible and is what most people end up doing.

As with any muhurta, keep it in proportion. A good date is a sensible use of flexibility you already have. It is not a reason to delay a vehicle you need, and it does not substitute for a test drive, an inspection or a fair price. For the wider view, see what muhurta can and cannot tell you.
